BIKE TOURING
IS THERE ANY AGE LIMIT TO BICYCLE TOURING?

Bike Couple

There isn't any real age for starting or limit from participating in bicycle touring. Of course, it would be best that you are in reasonable health and can balance on two wheels. If you do have a pre-existing medical condition, it is best that you check with your personal physician before you start out. Several years ago, I met a gentleman in Florida who was finishing up a solo cycling tour across the country in hopes that the exercise would help him recover from a heart attack.

Age isn't really a factor. I've heard of kids as young as seven years old to go on tour on their own bikes with their parents. Also, I have read about an eighteen month old child going across the country in a trailer behind their parent's bike. On the other side of the scale, there isn't really an age limit.

In my travels, I've met people in their eighties going on long solo trips where they carried all of their gear on their bikes. Several men that I've met in 1998 were in their mid-eighties and they were both finishing up long bike trips over six thousand miles. Along with this, bicycle touring isn't gender specific.

One of my most vivid memories of 1997 was meeting up with a group of ten senior citizens in Kansas who were heading eastward across the country. They had "sag support" to carry their gear and they were traveling up to thirty miles per day. What was so funny about them was that the first two riders in the lead were women. The first man was two miles behind and the last riders who were also men were at least five miles behind the lead women.
