MEDICAL CONDITIONS TO WATCH OUT FOR
The key to avoiding injury while on tour is to be cautious. Stay alert and stay withing your own physical limits. Most
of the injuries occured by touring cyclists are caused by lack of preparation and/or experience. The best cure for all
of the injuries listed below is rest.
Saddle pain
- Key to avoid saddle pain is to find a comfortable, adequately padded saddle and get used to it gradually. Most touring
rookies have to work through a little pain until their bodies are used to the feeling of the saddle. Start out slowly
and take frequent breaks. If the discomfort still continues, you should considr in trying a newer saddle.
Knee soreness
- Knee soreness can be caused by tendonitis or a number of other use-related ailments. The best thing is to train slowly,
effectively, and adequately. Slow down as soon as any pain develops. Pain could also come from a poorly adjusted sadle.
Make sure that your bike is set up correctly.
General muscle ache
- Back aches, neck aches, and shoulder aches commonly experienced by novice cyclists are usually caused by poor training.
Best way to avoid these problems is to start your training early. Continued problems might require that your bicycle be
readjusted.
Numbness
- Numbness in arms, hands, and/or toes is another problem of novice cycle tourists. This loss of feeling is from excessive
or prolonged pressure on certain blood vessels and nerves. To avoid any numbness, you need to pad the affected areas and/or
to change riding positions frequently while riding. Continued problems might require bicycle readjustment.
Tendonitis
- This is an inflammation to any tendon. In cycling, it mostly refers to tendons in your ankles and knees. It is usually
called by over use such as pushing too hard in too high of a gear or cycling without much proper training. The key to
avoiding this problem is to take it easy and to push your physical limits gradually instead of all at once.
