HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
IN YOU OWN TOWN
MATIT'YAH (MATTHEW) 25:35-36,40
"For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room, I was
shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit. I was in prison and you visited me."
"And the King shall say to them, "I'm telling you the truth; whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked
or ignored - you did it to me."
YOCHANAN-MAKABI (MARK) 12:30
"Love others as you would love yourself"
If you could follow these tenents in everything that you do, all would be well. At some United Methodists churches, there
are signs posted at the exits of their parking lots that read "You are now entering the Mission Field". A large amount of
people when look upon these signs they see in their minds missionaries that go around the world using words either spoken
or written to witness to people and express their religious beliefs but I like to say that you can be a missionary to
people in your own town through your actions. In the Jewish religion, there is a thought or commandment that says that
each one of us should do something to Tekun Olahm (Heal the World). It is commanded that we must do something
to help correct and solve the problems of the world.
There is an old saying that says that "Actions speak louder than words". Another old saying goes that "You have to Walk the
Walk and not just Talk the Talk." Also, another saying goes "G-d Words without G-d Actions don't mean squat."
That is quite true for actions reflect what a person truly believes in. Words can be spoken without not much thought behind
them but most often it takes quite a bit of thought to come up with the best kind of action.
I have to look back on several comments recorded for history which Ben Franklin said when he walked upon this world.
"The Scriptures assured him that at the Last Days we will be judged not on what we thought (spoke) but on what we did."
"That I want not to destroy any religion in any man but I wish it to be more of charity, kindness, and mercy not
just the attending of long services, the saying of long prayers, and the hearing of long sermons. If this was all that
there is to a man's religion, it would be like a tree being proud to be pruned and watered but not producing any fruit."
When people think about getting involved in something, they think that sending off a check to some agency is all that they
have to do. All agencies do need some kind of financial support but they also need "physical" support. Things don't happen
if people don't do them. There was some report made several years ago that said with some religious organizations that
"eighty percent of people give twenty percent of the money and twenty percent of the people do eighty percent of the work."
For the past few years on radio and television there have been spots that said that we should "GIVE FIVE". The creators
of the spots were saying that we should give five percent of your time to the service of people. I'm not sure whether the
creators of these advertisement spots wanted to express something closely scriptural but they did because when Adonai said
that we should present the "first tenth of the harvest to Him", He didn't just mean giving a tithe "ten percent of your
income to the religious organization you attend" but "ten percent" of all that you have which includes your personal time.
Some of you might feel that I mean to say that you should just get involved with a service organization either religious or
secular that help people but I mean to say that we should get involve with the people around us. We live in a society where
people don't even know the people who either live in the next apartment or floor of the building you live in or the next
house or street in the neghborhood where you live at. We sit down next to people in the pews or rows of the religious
organizations that we attend not knowing anything about that person or what their needs might be. We want to strive for a
personal relationship with our Creator but balk at having a personal relationship with the people around us.
There's an old summer camp skit used at religious camps that is called "Sally and the phone call from Adonai". Sally was
supposed to have received a call from Adonai in the morning saying that He would be coming down from heaven to visit her.
After the call, it was shown that Sally started to scurry around cleaning up her house to make it immaculate.
In her frantic cleaning, she was disturbed on three occasions by people at her house's doors. These perceived disturbances
were two men wanting to know whether she would by a raffle ticket to help support a service agency, a neighbor hoping that
Sally would babysit her two small kids while she had to go downtown for some kind of emergency, and a homeless man at her
back door asking if she had something small that she could spare for him to eat. Sally refused to help each one of these
people and speeded up her pace in the cleaning up of her house.
Towards evening, Sally was exhausted with her work and was frustrated that Adonai hadn't arrived. She expressed frustration
that Adonai had forced her to do all this work and He didn't show. When she least expected it she received another call
from the Adonai. In her frustration she blurted out, "Adonai, Why didn't you come? I had expected you all day." In a gentle
voice, Adonai replied, "Sally, I did but you turned me away three times."
Now that all of this has been said, here are some suggestions that you could do to get involved in your own mission
project in your own town.
I. Be a volunteer at an area hospital or retirement home.
II. Be a volunteer at your religious organization.
III. Be a volunteer at a school either during or in an "after-school program."
IV. Collect school supplies and either distribute them yourself to the kids in your neighborhood who are in need or give them to the schools so that they can distribute them.
V. Collect clothes or food and either distribute them yourself to the people in need or give them to an agency that can. Be a volunteer at a service agency to help distribute the above.
VI. Take part in "Meals on Wheels."
VII. Be a volunteer at a soup kitchen.
VIII. Get involved in a "reading program" to listen to young kid's read or with a program that helps teach people how to read.
IX. Give assistance to the elderly around you by either offering rides or doing minor things like clean-up or repair around that person's house.
X. Be an ear to hear people's needs.
XI. Get involved in the making of quilts or collect blankets or sleeping bags for the needy.
XII. Get involved in the making of small infant clothes for babies born to teen mothers that can not afford to clothe their child.
XIII. Fill a teddy bear with hugs and love and distribute them.
XIV. Get involved with Habitat for Humanity whether locally or abroad.
These are just a few suggestions but they are many more. All that I can say for you to do is to "be involved."
