STORIES FROM THE ROAD
April 12, 1993
BICYCLE RV
I took my new friend's advice and stayed an extra day
in Williams, Arizona. I was glad that I did because it had
snowed a little during the night. I was offered the
chance to go to here second grade class with the bike
and give a little talk to the kids.
Around ten in the morning, I loaded up the bicycle and
headed up to the school. I was surprised that when I
got to the school nobody stopped me and asked any
questions why I was bringing the bike into the school.
It took a few minutes finding my friend's classroom
and I was glad that the door was open.
The kids were all at their desks with a look of
surprise on their faces. For about a minute nobody
made a sound and then a little girl yelled out
"Teacher, Teacher, He's got a bicycle RV." This
comment really made my day because I didn't think a
second grader would make this association between my
loaded bike and an RV. For about an hour, the kids
crowded around the bike while I explained what was all
on it and also showed them where I've been on a map.
