STORIES FROM THE ROAD
April 28, 1993
BREAD FIND
About four miles out of Boise City, Oklahome, I took a short
break at the roadside rest near the intersection of US
64 and US 287. Actually, I had stopped in the rest
area to investigate this mound of something on top of
a picnic table that I had seen from the roadway. When
I got closer to the table, I saw that the mound was
actually made out of bread and pastries.
There must have been at least fourty loaves of bread
and I can't remember how many packages of pastries. It
looked like the bread was okay to eat. There were no
signs of holes in the plastic bags or evidence of
mold. The bread and pastries must have been placed on
the table earlier in the day because the birds handn't
even got into it yet.
The only thing that I noticed was that the bread was
outdated by a few days. This made me think that a
company truck had dumped the day-old stuff there
instead of taking it back to the distribution site. I
just say this as being a great find and I packed up
the bike with a loaf of whole wheat bread and as many
pastries that I could squirrel away in my panniers.
