STORIES FROM THE ROAD
AUG 15, 1996
NEAR MISS
When I had finished the bike path about ten miles
south of the Bear Mountain Bridge in New York and gotten back on
NY 9W, I noticed that the highway was pretty bad and
there was a lot of traffic. In front of me, a car was
getting ready to turn left. There wasn't any turning
lane in the area, so the guy in the car just stopped
and waited for the northbound traffic to clear.
I noticed in a rear-view mirror, that a car wasn't
going to stop and wait for the stopped car to get out
of the way but he wanted to go passed it on the right
side, This put me into a very dangerous position. I
had to swerve off what shoulder there was to get onto
the grass.
Instead of getting off the road safely, I hit a
pothole and went airborne into the grass. My
sunglasses fell off my face and broke. None of my
clothes or skin got damaged but I sort of sprained my
right ankle slightly. The bike came out a little
banged up with a spoke broken on the cluster side of
my rear wheel. The wheel is a little out of true but
it will have to do for a while. Praise ADONAI, I
wasn't hurt seriously.
