STORIES FROM THE ROAD
AUG 27, 1996
SERGE
Today was going to be a wet day. I was hoping to get
to my friends in Kill Devil Hills, NC before I got too
soaked but this was not the case because the drizzle
had turned into a steady downpour. About a north of
Grandy, I was surprised at meeting up with another
cycle tourist who was heading northwards. Actually, he
was another cyclist for Y'SHUA and he was pulling a
trailer.
Serge was from Quebec City. It was a surprise when he
called out my name because we had never met before. He
had seen one of the articles about my trip near
Pensacola, Fla.
Serge had started riding for Y'SHUA after he said he
had been saved from a five day long coma after a drug
overdose at a psychiatric hospital. He had been on the
road for over four thousand miles. Today was a sad day
for him because his riding partner had been killed
yesterday.
His partner had been a golden retriever pup. Somehow
last night on the Outer Banks, the pup had gotten
loose and been hit by a car. They had been together
for around a thousand miles.
