STORIES FROM THE ROAD
February 08, 1998
THE STOP
It was a cool morning. A brisk headwind brought the
temperature down into the 30's while I was riding
through The Francis Marion National Forest north of Charleston, South
Carolina. Near McClemsonville, SC on U.S. 17/201, I had to stop to put a
sweatshirt on.
Right before I got back on the highway's shoulder to
head out again, a pick-up truck stopped and pulled off
the road behind me. The driver got out and yelled at
me that he wanted to talk. I found out that he had
ridden from San Diego, Ca. to St. Augustine, Fla. last
Spring. After about ten minutes of talking, he slipped
a twenty dollar bill in my hand before he got back
into his truck.
