STORIES FROM THE ROAD
May 31, 1998
ONLY ONE DOLLAR
I had a pretty good day even though I rode only
twenty-nine miles. Church days are also low mileage
days. Today was one of the lowest because of the light
rain I rode through. A couple of miles out of Belfast, ME
I came across three cyclists who were within a couple
days of finishing a ride from Miami to Bar Harbor.
Right after we parted company, the light drizzle
turned into rain. Halfway between Lincolnville and
Camden in the Camden Hills State Park area, I came
across the Lighthouse Cottages and Motel. The cottages
were advertised for twenty-five dollars so I decided
to stop and get one. I was surprised that they only
accepted one dollar when they found out that I was a
missionary. Instead of a regular cabin, they gave me
an efficiency with a small kitchen.
Mrs. Shattuck who was the operator called up the local
Baptist minister. Pastor Bill came by to take me to
the evening service at his church. The congregation
was small with about a dozen people present. I was
given time to share what I'm doing. Even though the
congregation was small, I was surprised at getting
thirty-six dollars in "green handshakes".
