STORIES FROM THE ROAD

WALKERS
A tailwind was pushing closer and closer to the Kansas
state line from Lamar, CO. I was averaging around
fifteen miles an hour. About a couple of miles from
the state line, I was puzzled by some weird activity
in front of me.
It was too far away for me to figuere
it out. It looked like a pair of moving sticks but
there was some weird flapping motion. As I got closer
to it, I found out that it was two guys walking with
large arm swings as to propel their stride longer.
Paul Callens and Ajax Joe Drayton were walking across
the country to raise awareness for the development of
a National Unity Day which would possibly become an
adjuct to Columbus Day. This Day of Unity would
celebrate the commonness in the family of humanity
while honoring the individuality of each member.
They had started from Ocean City, Maryland and were hoping
to arrive in San Franciso, CA. on October 10th. They
would have walked a little over 3,300 miles across the
country along U.S. 50. Along with them was a driver
for a bus that carried all of their needed supplies
and belongings.
