STORIES FROM THE ROAD
August 23, 1999
GRANNY "D"
I got on the road around 7 a.m. I wanted to get into
Forrest City, AR for the night. When I turned the corner
to ride through downtown Lonoke, I came across a
mini-parade. There were about a dozen people walking
eastward with a flag and some banners.
When I got to them, I found out that they were giving
support to a very special person. Doris Haddock of
Dublin, New Hampshire was walking from from Los
Angeles, California to Washington, D.C. She was
walking to bring awareness about campaign finance
reform. What was so unique about this walk was the
fact that Doris was eighty-nine years old.
Doris (who is known to her grandchildren as "Granny
D") started from Los Angeles on January 1, 1999. She
walks up to ten miles per day. Her hope is to be in
Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Capitol on January 24,
2000. This is her ninetieth birthday.
