TRIP 2001 UPDATES
Update #2 - March 30th
Americus, GA
It's hard to believe that in 61 hours, I'll be heading out again. The recumbent is almost packed. It looks like some kind
of strange yellow spaceship with lime green panniers in the back. I got yellow reflective tape placed on some sections
including a couple of strips on my pedal arms for visibility.
I got an insulated water bottle fastened on top of my rear rack truck and the nozzle looks like the exhaust for a really
small rocket engine. I'm hoping that I will not need to use a real rocket to move along. I think that I'm carrying a
little over 35 pounds on my rear rack. I'm really amazed at how much I could pack in the really large panniers I got this
time.
The trailer is almost packed. I think the weight of it is around 30 pounds also. Most of the weight is my camping gear. If
my estimates are true, I'll actually have a rig sixteen pounds lighter than what I normally travel with. A couple luxuries
that I've never carried before is a small camping stove that uses denatured alcohol and a set of dress clothes and shoes
for the occasions where either cycling tights or sweatpants will not be proper attire.
Weather permitting this weekend, I'll be taking a couple of training rides. They are talking about rain over the weekend.
We do need it in the area since Sw Georgia has been experiencing a drought the past three years. On Monday, the forcast is
clear skies, no chance of rain, and afternoon temperatures in the seventies. Weather projection for Tuesday and Wednesday
are pretty good also.
I'll probably be just doing short rides the first week to get used to the new rig. Monday's goal would just be to the next
city to the East of Americus, Cordele (a distance less than forty miles). I will mostly likely be in Georgia for the most
part of next week as I make my way over to the SW corner of South Carolina.
