TRIP 2002

Update #3 - Jan 13th
Apalachicola, FL - 243 miles (389 KM)

In a neat twist of luck, I was able to have another day off the bicycle. This gave me some extended time on the internet so I was able to do some much-needed site maintenance. I'm quite surprised that the site is holding up as well as it is without my doing site maintenance every few days or so.

Since the two previous updates seemed to dwell on my negative experiences here in Florida, I thought that I would write about some of the positive experiences. There have been quite a few.

I've probably had a dozen or so motel rooms donated. These kept me off the cold ground. Even down in southern Florida, I had to deal with temperatures in the teens or low twenties. I've never been without food. Several churches gave me free access to their food pantries and I was able to fill up my food pannier several times. I even had a pair of tennis shoes donated to me.

Money has come when I needed it. A couple of churches took up love offerings. Last week, two church took up offerings totalling over two hundred dollars. People on the street have even stopped me to slip me a few dollars. While walking through Cross City, Florida, an elderly couple in a car stopped to slip me a five dollar bill and a plastic bottle of honey. Money has even come my way through law enforcement officers.

Several churches have allowed me to stay in their fellowship halls. The past seven nights have been in church parsonages. These nights have provided me with good company, internet access, good food, laundry usage, among other things. ADONAI does provide for me through HIS people.

I will be in Florida for maybe a week more. There is about three hundred miles left to the Alabama State Line. I'm heading to Waveland, Mississippi near Biloxi to check out a ministry that has been asking for volunteers. Eventually after spending a short time in Mississippi, I'll be heading towards Baldwin, Lousiana to see if I can volunteer a little while at the UMCORP Saeger-Brown Disaster Relief Center. From there, I might be riding through the Southern part of Texas waiting for it to get warm enough for me to head north.
