TRIP 2002

Update #6 - Jan 30th
Beaumont, Texas - 975 miles (1560 KM)

The ride from Baldwin, Louisiana to Beaumont, Texas went okay. The weather was a lot better than I expected. For the past couple of days, the temperature was in the seventies. In a couple of days, a cold front will be coming through so the high temperature will only be in the upper fifties.

There were two tricky places to deal with. One was trying to get over the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles. U.S. 90 joined I-10 at the bridge and then on the west side for three miles. It took me three hours to try and get a ride. Yesterday, I waited nearly two hours to get a ride across the I-10 bridge across the Sabine River at the Texas State Line. I finally got a lift from a deputy sheriff with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's department. He took me over the bridge (which has been under construction for the past two years) to the Texas State Visitor Center in Orange, Texas. I had to ride along I-10 for about a mile before U.S. 90 split off again.

I spent a lot of the nights in donated motel rooms. Last Sunday, I was able to talk during the service at the Methodist church in Jennings, LA and during a Sunday school class. That night, I got to speak during the evening service at the Lake Charles, Louisiana First Baptist Church. Between the two churches, I received almost $100 in love offerings and a donated motel room in Lake Charles. Last night, I stayed in the youth center of the First Baptist Church in Port Arthur, Texas. The night before that I stayed in the youth center of the Methodist church in Vinton, Louisiana.

Today, I'm just riding a half day from Port Arthur to Beaumont. From Beaumont, I'll be swinging around SE Houston to Galveston. At Galveston, I will be riding along the Texas Gulf coastline to Corpus Christi. After Corpus Christi, I'll be cycling NE to Nacadoches and then crossing back into Lousiana close to Alexandria, Louisiana. My route in Texas will be about a thousand miles long and I will probably be here in Texas for about three weeks.
