TRIP 2002

Update #29 - July 01st
Augusta, Maine - 4,569 miles (7310 KM)

I guess that my recovery has been going okay from the major shoulder surgery. The twenty suture staples were removed ten days after the operation. X-rays were taken at the orthopaedic specialist office and I got to see the artificial metal head in my left shoulder. My orthopaedist says that everything looks okay.

There is not much pain during the day. I'm off all prescribed pain killers and now just take Ibuprofen. I still can't sleep throughout the night or fall asleep before midnight. It might be around 1:30 a.m. when I finally dose off. Most of the pain is from the muscles in my upper arm. I'm thinking about trying out over-the-counter topical pain creams to see if this would relieve the pain.

I've had two weeks of physical therapy so far. I go twice a week. I've got seven sessions this month. The therapist is pretty pleased at my recovery. When I'm lying down, I can move my left arm about 150 degrees (sixty degrees behind my ear). Along with these sessions, I've been doing flexation reps three times a day. These have me lying on my back and seeing how far I can extend my left arm behind my head at an angle and holding that position between 45 and 60 seconds. I do up to fifteen reps a session. I've found out that I got about 40 degrees of movement to the side. Standing up, I can extend my left arm about 45 degrees behind me. I'm able to raise my left hand about 110 degrees from my feet.

There is a prediction that I will get back about 80 percent of my shoulder function back. I will not probably get to the full percentage of usage until a year after the operation. At least, I'm on the recovery side of the accident and on the mend now. Praise ADONAI for that.

I'm trying to keep a positive attitude and hope that I'll be able to get back to the ministry that ADONAI called me out to do. I know that my orthopaedist will not like to hear this but I'm thinking about leaving the Augusta area before the start of August. I can't see myself staying at the place I'm at now. It isn't a good place and I can't see putting good money into someplace that is pretty bad. A minister friend has mentioned to me that I might be able to stay with them in Massachusetts for while.

All I can do now is pray that things will work out and have faith. Any prayers would be appreciated.
