TRIP 2003 UPDATES
Update #21 - May 07, 2003
Brookings, OR - 3,313.4 miles (5,301.4 kms.)
This past week has been not as wet and cold as the past couple of weeks along the coast. There was three days without
rain. Yeah!!! According to the weather reports on the radio, April has been twenty degrees colder than normal. In some
places, over twenty inches of rain fell for the month.
I stayed at three more state parks along the way. They were Humboldt Redwoods, Patrick's Point, and Prairie Creek Redwoods.
The night at Humboldt Redwoods was okay. I didn't have a good night's stay at Patrick's Point because around 2:30 in
the morning the campsite next to me was attacked by a band of racoons. They had forgotten to put away their food and
things and the racoons got into it. The stay at Prairie Creek was just the opposite. The hiker/ biker campsite was at
the end of a road next to a prairie where Roosevelt Elk come to eat. There was at least a dozen elk in the prairie. I
got there early enough in the afternoon to take advantage of the sun's warmth and get down to my t-shirt while I aired
out my camping gear and dried my tent. Two of the other campers in the campground befriended me and slipped me $10
Two motel rooms were donated by churches in Fortuna and Arcata. I had been able to connect with the police chaplains in
each of these towns. The chaplain in Arcata came down to the police station to meet me and then he took me out to a Motel
6 for the night.
Last night, I stayed with the minister of the Methodist church in Crescent City. I got a good meal and the chance to get
some laundry washed and dried. Before leaving this morning, the minister slipped me $20 and also gave me some breakfast
bars for me to take along the way.
I crossed into Oregon about 1:30 p.m. I've got about 340 miles to ride along the Oregon Coast. I'm not sure how many state
beaches and parks I will be staying at because the fee for a hiker/biker campsite is $4 in the state even though they
include a free hot shower in with the price.
I'll try to post an update as often as I can if there are any changes in my plans.
