TRIP 2006 UPDATES
Update #10 - April 21, 2006
Signal Mountain, TN
1115.9 miles ( 1785.6 kms) since March 27th,
1616.8 miles ( 2586.9 kms) since Jan 01st
I've finally got a day off. The first one since Palm Sunday, which I celebrated with friends back in Jacksonville Beach,
FL almost 520 miles ago. I'm spending the day off with a local minister here in Signal Mountain (just NW of Chattanooga,
TN).
The ride from Jacksonville Beach, FL to here went okay. The only problem was that in Georgia a good portion of the shoulder
on newly paved highways is taken up by rumble strips. Because of this, I had to get a rear spoke replaced that broke from
all of the stress. Also, I lost the slow-moving vehicle sign that I had on the back of the bicycle ever since I found it
back in Wyoming almost 3 years ago during my last trip across the country. It fell off somewhere between Villa Rica and
Cartersville, GA. I made a homemade sign a couple of days ago.
Along the way, I was able to meet with some old friends and make some new ones. Along the way, I was able to stay in 3
homes and had 3 motel rooms donated. The most unusual place was staying in one of classrooms of the old highschool in
Jesup, GA that had been converted into the sheriff's office while the old sheriff building is being remodeled.
I did have one close call with a car back in Calhoun, GA. Lucky for me that I was able to stop quickly and the guy behind
me who almost hit me swerved during the last seconds with squelching brakes. I might not have survived this accident since
the car was really going fast.
I'll be following US 127 through the rest of Tennessee and most of the way to Wilmore, KY (in the Lexington area).
I'll try and post and update as often as I can if my plans change.
