TRIP 2007 UPDATES

Update #10 - Tuesday, April 17, 2007
Darien,CT
3,982.80 miles (4,942.48 kms) since Jan 01st
2,242.04 miles (3,587.26 kms) since March 03

Because of a major storm that was coming into the area, I made a jump by rail Saturday between Metuchen, NJ through New York City, NY to Darien, CT. I wouldn't been able to do this unless a Christian cyclist didn't stop me in Metuchen to invite me to his house for a hot meal. I was actually heading northward to the Bear Mountain Bridge across from Peeskill, NY and then southeast to Darien. This trip would have taken me at least five to six days but I covered the distance in 5 hours. Both tickets cost me under $20 and the bike was free.

I am really glad that I took this jump by rail. The rain on Sunday lasted mostly through the day with high winds. It would not have been a good time to be on the road. This Northeaster had some of the highest rain totals since 1882. In Central Park, NYC, NY had almost 9 inches of rain. Major flooding occured in Connecticut and New Jersey.

I had a dry place to stay here in Darien, CT. This is the third time in five years that I have stayed in the SHAC (Senior High Activity Center) of the Noroton Presbyterian Church. The center is a refurbished barn. There was a shower, kitchen, coutches to sleep on, and a color tv. Also, there was pool tables to try out my skills.

I'll be heading out today along the CT Coast. Along the way, I'll try and contact some more members in the Warm Showers Association. As of 1998, I've stayed with 69 members. It's going to be cool the next couple of days. By Saturday, it is supposed to be getting back into the sixties.

Possibly in Maine, I'll be going farther up the coast than what I've cycled before. This would have me cross New Hampshire and Vermont farther north than what I've done before. I just hope that the mountain gremlins will look nicely upon me so I don't have a repeat on what happened in 2003 (the bike crash) or something worse.

I'll try and post an update as often as I can if my plans change. The next update should be posted between April 25th and May 01st.
