TRIP 2008

Update #05 - March 02nd
Americus, Georgia
0 miles (0 KM)

The big day is finally here and I hope that I'll be able to sleep tonight. Tomorrow, I'll be heading out finally around 8 a.m. heading west to Columbus, Georgia. I needed to change my route some because they are calling for some strong storms to be coming through this part of the country. There are some members of two of the associations that I belong to and I'm sure that I'll be inside for the night some place.

The only concern that I've got is that Tuesday, March 04th, there is a 70% chance that I'll be caught outside in the storms between Columbus, Georgia and Auburn-Opelika, Alabama. I cannot postpone the trip since I've already have commitments. It will not be the first time I've been caught in the rain and it will probably not be the last. My hope is that there will not be any thunderstorms to be dealt with. I do know that I have a place to stay Wednesday night in the Wetumpka, Alabama area.

I am also hoping that I will not in any winter weather in Illinois and Iowa. I hope that spring arrives early up there since I need to be at an evening church service in Jacksonville, Illinois March 20th. I've been pretty lucky making connections with ministers and people along my route. All of my advance planning has paid off. Right now, I know where I will be spending 75 the 227 nights that I will be on the road.

There have been some corrections done on the route since some of the area that I was going to ride through were too small to have churches in the area or even towns. Also, the distance has been shortened some since I decided not to make a trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before heading south at Washington, D.C. Because of this, the trip will be almost 400 miles shorter and I'll be back hopefully in Americus, Georgia by Oct 16th instead of the 25th.

Also, I decided to take advantage of some bike trails to get me through the Appalachian Mountain Range. From Wheeling, West Virginia, I will be making my way to Connellsville, Pennsylvania where I will be getting on the Cumberland - Pittsburgh Rails-to-Trails route to Cumberland, Maryland where I will get on the historic C&O Canal Towpath route to Leesburg, VA where I will get on the W&OD Rails-to-Trails route to Arlington/ Shirlington, Virginia, which is a short bike ride over the Potomac to Washington, D.C.

Well, this is all I think I need to write now. The next update should be posted between March 09th and March 16th.
