TRIP 2008

Update #20 - September 03rd
Lexington, South Carolina
8670 miles (13,872 KM)

This is the fifteenth and last update from the road. I'm within 363 miles (485 KM) of getting back to Americus, Georgia. I hope to be back in Americus late next week but this depends on where Hurricane Hannah comes ashore in the next couple of days.

It's been a fast nine days of cycling. The miles have gone by fast and so have the states. Since my last update, I've finished my rode across North Carolina and almost three quarters across South Carolina. I've rode 560 miles (895 KM) since August 24th.

I was looking forward to ride along the North Carolina Outer Banks this year but since I would have done so during the last week of Summer I wouldn't have had a good time since it would be possibly wall-to-wall people. What also stopped me was that I couldn't find a safe route through the Hampton Roads area of SE Virginia.

From Suffolk, Virginia, I took a more straighter route south into North Carolina. I spent the night in my tent outside of Gliden, North Carolina and Stateburg, South Carolina. First Baptist Churches in Plymouth, North Carolina and Andrews, South Carolina. I spent nights at the United Methodist Churches in Hampstead, North Carolina and Little River, South Carolina. The Presbyterian Church in Pollacksville, North Carolina was my host for a night. Last night and tonight, I'm being hosted by one of the mobilization strategists of the South Carolina Baptist Conference who lives in Lexington (SW of Columbia).

From Lexington, I'll be riding to the Aiken, South Carolina area. I might have to hold up some place in Aiken Friday to allow Hurricane Hannah to go passed me. Hopefully, it will make landfall more north of me. After Aiken, I'll be crossing back into Georgia. On the way to Americus, I'm looking at making stops for the night in Louisville, Vidalia, McRae, and Cordele.
