TRIP 2008

Update #29 - December 21st
Franklin, Louisiana
1466 miles (2346 KM) since November 15th
10,433 miles (16,693 KM) since January 01st

Because of more increment weather, I was not able to leave High Island and the Bolivar Peninsula until Wednesday, Dec. 17th. The weather has gone from warm weather in the 70s, to fog, drizzle, to cold temperatures in the 40s and 50s with strong winds. At least, I have not had to deal with any more snow like I did Dec 10th.

I had some problems coming back into Louisiana. While riding across the interstate bridge over the Sabine River, I must have hit something sharp because my front tire went flat. I had to hobble the bike for about a mile before I could get off the bridge and find some place to stop and fix the flat tire. When I got off the bridge back in Louisiana, I stopped and fixed the flat. The front tire was a bit damaged. There was a puncture that went clear through the tire so I put a patch on the inside and also plugged up the cut with some strips of patch. I wasn't sure how far I could get on the front tire but I was able to make at least fifty miles on it until I could find another tire in Lake Charles.

When I got to Lafayette, I had the option to head north to Opelousas and then backtrack to New Roads and cross the Mississippi River there. This didn't seem like a good option because I heard that the ferry might be out of commission. I've opted to ride to New Orleans through New Iberia, Jeanerette, Baldwin, Francis, Morgan City, and Thibidaux.

I am not sure where I might be for Christmas. I just hope that I will not be in my tent. I'm going to try and get to the volunteer center of Habitat for Humanity in Thibodaux tomorrow or possibly try and stop at the Presbyterian Disaster Volunteer Center in Luling. I just hope that I could find somebody there. If I get to Luling, I could possibly make it through New Orleans in one day and be able to make it to Pearlington, Mississippi.

Currently, I'm about two weeks away from Georgia if I go straight there. I am going to see how the recovery is going on along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and then possibly ride to Tallahassee, Florida to meet some people with a ministry there before going up to Georgia. This will probably get me back to Americus, Georgia towards the end of January.

The next update should be between Dec. 28 and Jan. 04.
