TRIP 2009

Update #05 - March 13th
Americus, Georgia
264 miles (422 KM) since Jan 01st

There really has not been much happening since my last update. I am taking bike rides around Americus for training. There are a lot of hills with some steep climbs in and around Americus and I've been tackling them in either high or middle range gears to get my legs back into shape. They are not really out of shape since I've ridden around 400 miles (640 KM) since being back from my last mission trip.

I have been making some of my gear by hand since there are no bicycle or camping supply stores in the area where I could get gear to meet my needs. You cannot buy everything at Wal-Mart. The panniers that I'm using do not have external pockets for water bottles so I sewed up four tubular pouch pockets and sewed them on. I just finished sewing together a tubular waterproof bag that I will carry my rain gear, towel, and wash cloth in. I need to make some modifications to the bags that I will use to carry my netbook and one that I will use as a trunk bag on top of my camping gear.

Through the use of Couch Surfing and Hospitality Club, I pretty well have places to stay during the first two weeks of my trip. I have also made a list of members of both groups who are on the rest of my trip. Also, I've got the names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of at least two or three churches in each of my nightly stop overs so that I can do some advance contacting during the trip. This seemed to work quite well during my last mission trips.

The next update should be between March 20 and March 23.
