TRIP 2009

Update #09 - April 12th
Lexington, South Carolina
883 miles (1413 KM) since March 22nd
1147 miles (1835 KM) since January 01st

For the past four days I have been staying with some friends who I had stayed with last Fall. I met Tim through another program that I belong to "Servant Evangelism". It's been okay getting off the road a little bit. I got to do some work on my recumbent that I needed to get done. I needed to find some way to stabilize my rear rack that was wobbling from side to side. I didn't have any metal to use so I used a block of wood that I had cut down to shape and some wood screws. The old adage is make do with what you got. This was better than what I had before which was some electrical tape and zip ties.

From Jesup, it had taken me three days to get to Lexinton, South Carolina. I spent the night in Sylvania, Georgia and Denmark, South Carolina. Churches hosted me for the night.

Along the way, there are always some interesting animals that you meet or see. My friends have an interesting little dog who is part chihuahua and pug. His name is Monty (aka Gremlin or Taz (like the cartoon Tasmanian Devil)). Gremlin can be a cute and cuddly dog but there is a spark of meanness that comes out in a very unusual way. Every once in a while, Gremlin comes out with this very unique vocalization. I wished that I could record the sound and have it set up as a wav file. There is a short period of low growling that is joined with an almost human like mumbling. Along with the vocalization, there is a lot of lip smacking and tongue movement. The vocalization starts out low and slow but it gets louder and faster. After about 20 seconds, the vocalization goes to barking. It is really something else to see Here is a picture of Gremlin during one of his quiet periods.

I wouldn't want to get their other dog Daisy jealous so here is a picture of her. She is also a chihuahua.

There has been a change in my route. As I mentioned in my last update, I might be cancelling out Charleston, SC. I am taking a more direct route to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The next update should be between April 19 and April 26.
