TRIP 2009

Update #21 - July 15th
Plymouth, Minnesota
4842 miles (7747 KM) since March 22nd
5106 miles (8170 KM) since January 01st

I am 342 miles (547 KM) from Savanna, Illinois. For most of the ride north was along the Mississippi River. I rode up the East side from Savanna, IL through Prairie du Chen, Wisconsin to Lansing, Iowa where I crossed the Mississippi River. From Lansing, Iowa, I rode up the West Side to Hastings, Minnesota where I rode out of the Mississippi River Valley. I made stops along the way from Savanna, IL in Dickey and Prairie du Chen, Wisconsin; Lansing, Iowa; Mankato and Lake City, Minnesota.

One of the most interesting things that I stopped to look at along the way was Dam and Lock #5 on the Mississippi River. I spent about two hours there watching the tow boats and barges go through the lock. I took over 200 photos there and they can be seen in the slide show section for this year. It takes eight minutes for each cycle of the lock either raising or lowering the boats.

For the past three days, I have been staying with some friends of mine in Plymouth, Minnesota west of Minneapolis. Tomorrow, I will be heading out again. Instead of heading south to Iowa, I will be riding across Minnesota to South Dakota and then heading south to Denver. I am looking at adding Denver and Fort Collins, Colorado to my route.

I will be making a stop in Greensburg, Kansas during the ride back from Colorado to Georgia instead of on the way to Colorado. Ninety-five percent of Greensburg was destroyed by an EF-5 tornado on May 4, 2007. I hope to learn some "green-technology" rebuilding.

The next update should be between July 24 and August 01.
