TRIP 2010

Update #16 - June 25th
Savanna, Illinois
3,960.06 miles (6,336.10 KM)

Eighth update for the trip. I arrived here in Savanna, Illinois Wednesday afternoon, June 23rd and I'll be here through at least the weekend and will be heading out again Monday, June 28th to Plymouth, Minnesota (west of Minneapolis).

I'm staying with a Pentacostel minister friend and his wife. I didn't think that they were going to be around. The last email communication that I had with them was in March and it said that they were planning to move to Western Washington state. I was thinking that I was going to connect with the minister at the First Presbyterian Church.

My goal to come to the Savanna area was actually to stop at my friend's (Gary Arnold's) bike shop in Thomson (ten miles to the south). I've known Gary since 2005 and his shop was where I got my first Easy Racer/ Sun EZ-Speedster recumbent (the -SX). He is one of the few bicycle mechanics that I trust working on my recumbents.

Between customers up front, Gary worked on my recumbent in back. The headset had to be completely replaced. While I was in Florida back in March, I had to have the headset worked on since it was a bit loose. They might have tightened it a bit too much. For the last 1,000 miles (1,600 KM), there was a loud cracking sound coming from the headset whenever I turned the steering column a bit far from center.

The bottom ball bearing race had broken into several pieces. Also, both top and bottom cones were pretty pitted. I was wondering why the grease had leaked out. The rear derailleur had to be adjusted. Gary didn't have any derailleur pulleys that I needed so he has to order some.

When he checked out the chain, it was pretty loose. It turns out that when the people at the bike shop in Albany, Georgia had put on the new chains they hadn't cut down one of them. Instead of running on 2.5 chains, I had been running on the whole three. The chains were so stretched out that Gary offered to replace them for free.

I'll try and add a new update every two weeks along the way so the next one will be around July 10th.
