TRIP 2011

Update #08 - April 17th
Carlinville, Illinois
315.90 miles (505.44 KM)

This hasn't been a good start of a trip. These have been probably the hardest twelve days. There have been problems after problems. During the very first day, I had multiple problems with the recumbent and one of the panniers below the seat fell off. I didn't know that this happened until way late in the night. I didn't feel it or hear it fall off. The pannier was on the right side of the recumbent. I lost my toiletries, first aid kit, rain suit, windbreaker jacket, and a couple pieces of non-cycling clothes. Also, I lost one of the new water bottles so I am down to three water bottles. A couple of days later, part of the valve for my hydration pack fell out so I lost a major source of water for the day.

With regards to the recumbent, I had problems with the front derailleur. For some reason, I cannot get down into my really low (Granny) gears. This really hurt me going up long and steep grades. Instead of 27 speeds, I've just got 18 speeds. Hopefully, I will be able to get this repaired. I did have problems with my front disc brake squealing but I was able to fix this on the side of the road by tightening up the cones in the wheel. Some of my new donated equipment also caused me some problems. A couple of days ago, I needed to put some more air into my rear tire. The pump that I got from a corporate sponsor didn't work very well and it caused the valve stem to fail. I had to go out and get a new pump.

The weather has been problems. I had to take breaks off the road in the Moline and Verdon areas because of bad weather (cold, wet, and high winds). Hopefully, I am going to have better weather soon but from what I've heard on the news I'll have to deal with more bad wather by the end of the week.

From Carlinville, Illinois, I will be cycling to Memphis, Tennessee, and then on to Greenville, Mississippi. At Greenville, I will be crossing the Mississippi River and then head to Shreveport, Louisiana where I will be stopping for a few days and volunteering with the Fuller Center For Housing and help them build some homes.

I will keep everybody abreast through upcoming updates. Usually, I try and add a new update every two weeks along the way so the next one will be around May 01st, 2011.
