TRIP 2011

Update #09 - May 01st
Senatobia, Mississippi
777.09 miles (1,243.34 KM)

I wished that I could say that there haven't been any more problems but there has. In one day, I had three flats with the rear tire. Also, the new pump that I bought in Jacksonville, Illinois broke. These things were not that bad to deal with but the thing that really through me for a loop was that there was a really long section of sidewall on one side of the rear tire that failed. It was too long for me to try and put a patch on it and sew it up.

I was stranded between Dyersburg and Covington, Tennessee. I couldn't call anybody because the SIM card of my cell phone didn't work. Several people stopped but nobody made an offer to take me into Covington. After about a half hour, an ambulance stopped and they offered to take me into Covington to the police station. It was around 4:50 PM when I walked into the station. The officers were pretty friendly. One officer was able to connect with a minister and a room at a local motel was offered. Another officer took me inside the station and there was an offer for me to take a tire off of one of the rescued bikes. There were a couple of bikes that had 26 inch tires but they were mountain bikes. The tire was knobby and wider than what I'm used to using but it will have last till I get to Shreveport,

The weather has also been problems. I had to take breaks off the road in the Clinton, Kentucky and Dyersburg, Tennessee areas because of bad weather (high winds and storms). Hopefully, I am going to have better weather soon but from what I've heard on the news I'll have to deal with the possibility of more bad weather for the next couple of days. I had to take today off in Senatobia because the threat of bad weather. It was lucky for me that the storms today stayed more north.

From Senatobia, I will be cycling to Greenville, Mississippi. At Greenville, I hope to cross the Mississippi River into Southeast Arkansas and then head to Shreveport, Louisiana. This is my plan but there is a big concern that I might not get to cross the bridge because there is talk of flooding along the Mississippi River. In Shreveport, I will be stopping to volunteer with the Fuller Center For Housing and help them build some homes.

I will keep everybody abreast through upcoming updates. Usually, I try and add a new update every two weeks along the way so the next one will be around May 01st, 2011.
