TRIP 2011

Update #11 - May 28th
Shreveport, Louisiana
1,190.51 miles (1,904.32 KM)

The past nineteen days since I arrived in Shreveport, Louisiana have been okay. I have been having a good time volunteering with the Fuller Center For Housing of Nw Louisiana chapter here in the Allendale neighborhood of Shreveport. The staff has really made me welcome. I spent the first week working on the 43rd house. I helped install the inside doors, bottom trim, and the soffits outside. Currently, I've been in the office preparing spreadsheets using Excel, performing research for software purchasing, doing some computer maintenance, and doing anything else to help out.

Alice (my recumbent) is doing okay. She is now sporting a pair of Kenda Kwest tires. Also, the problem that I had with the front derailleur has been fixed. I can now get down into my low "Granny" gears and it is so good to be able to climb up hills again without struggling in my middle gears.

I will be here through Sunday, June 5th. On Monday, June 6th, I will be starting the trip to Waco, Texas. From Waco, I was going to be heading south to San Antonio, Texas and then back across Louisiana in the southern part of the state. Instead, I will be heading to Joplin, Missouri via Dallas, Texas and Oklahoma Coty, Oklahoma. With the route that I have planned, I am about 900 miles away from Joplin.

I have decided that this year's mission trip will be a ride more of service than riding. I'm not going for high number of miles. If I ride just 4,000 or 5,000 miles this year that will be okay. Between Shreveport and Joplin, I will possibly stopping to volunteer with Fuller Center For Housing and Habitat For Humanity affiliates along the way and any other ministries that I feel led to stop at. I am not sure where I might go after Joplin. Sometime this year, I might be making my way to Birmingham and Tuskaloosa, Alabama.

Since the door of me going back to Americus, Georgia for the winter seems to be closed, I have to come up with another place to winter out at. One thing for sure, I will not be going north to stay. For the past couple of days, I have been led to maybe come back here to Shreveport and volunteer over the winter.

I will keep everybody abreast through upcoming updates. Usually, I try and add a new update every two weeks along the way so the next one will be around June 11th, 2011.
