TRIP 2011

Update #12 - June 06th
Marshall, Texas
1,236.54 miles (1,978.46 KM)

After spending almost 3.5 weeks at the Fuller Center For Housing of Nw Louisiana chapter of Shreveport, Louisiana, I am heading to Joplin, Missouri to help out with the tornado relief. Along the way, I will be cycling through Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma. The staff at the Fuller Center really made me welcome. I spent the first week working on the 43rd house. I helped install the inside doors, bottom trim, and the soffits outside. Currently, I've been in the office preparing spreadsheets using Excel, performing research for software purchasing, doing some computer maintenance, and doing anything else to help out.

Alice (my recumbent) is doing okay. She is now sporting a pair of Kenda Kwest tires. Also, the problem that I had with the front derailleur has been fixed. I can now get down into my low "Granny" gears and it is so good to be able to climb up hills again without struggling in my middle gears. I needed some new panniers (bike bags) below the seat. I wasn't able to find ones at shops in Shreveport so I made some one using some soda can cooler bags that I bought at Big Lots and snaps and straps that I cut off the old snaps and straps from the old pannier.

The temperature was really high today. When I got to Marshall, Texas, I saw two electronic thermometers at banks. One thermometer said 97 and another one said 107. According to the television weather report, the high for the area was 100. Tomorrow, the high is again going to be close to 100. Because of this, I will be going to hot weather mode. I will be trying to get on the road around sunrise and then getting my miles in hopefully before noon or no later than 2 PM. Also, I am going to just ride between 20 and 40 miles each day. Because of this my estimated arrival into Joplin will be around June 26th. My 55th birthday on June 15th will be celebrated as I ride between Sulphur and Pauls Valley, Oklahoma south of Oklahoma City. I hope to stop and volunteer with the Fuller Center in Oklahoma City. In Joplin, Missouri, I hope to volunteer with the local Habitat For Humanity affiliate and Operation Blessing.

I have decided that this year's mission trip will be a ride more of service than riding. I'm not going for high number of miles. If I ride just 4,000 or 5,000 miles this year that will be okay. Between Shreveport and Joplin, I will possibly stopping to volunteer with Fuller Center For Housing and Habitat For Humanity affiliates along the way and any other ministries that I feel led to stop at. I am not sure where I might go after Joplin. Sometime this year, I might be making my way to Birmingham and Tuskaloosa, Alabama. Since I will be close to the Midwest, I will be possibly be heading to Central Missouri and Iowa to help out with any possible disaster relief along the Missouri River that it is flooding now.

Since the door of me going back to Americus, Georgia for the winter seems to be closed, My plans will be returning to Shreveport, Louisiana and volunteering with the Fuller Center For Housing of NW Louisiana in Shreveport again. I will possibly be there from possibly October or November of this year to possibly March or April of next year.

I will keep everybody abreast through upcoming updates. Usually, I try and add a new update every two weeks along the way so the next one will be around June 20th, 2011.
