TRIP 2011

Update #13 - June 13th
Madill, Oklahoma
1,490.11 miles (2,384.18 KM)

My time in Texas was short and I have made some new friends but I am glad that I am out of texas. The Texas State Department of Transportation puts a layer of chip-seal on it's roads. Chip-seal is a layer of tar coated with stones. This layer is supposed to keep the road from degrading but it is terrible to ride on since it is so bumpy. The worse thing is when the chip-seal is fresh and there is a cloud of stone dust. I am so glad that I didn't have to deal with stone dust.

The temperature was really high today. Since leaving, Shreveport, Louisiana, I had to deal with temperaturs in the high 90s Farenheit (high 30s Celsius). When I got to Madill, Oklahoma, I found out that the afternoon temperature was going to be around 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees Celsius). Because of this, I will be going to hot weather mode. I will be trying to get on the road around sunrise and then getting my miles in hopefully before noon or no later than 2 PM. Today, I was on the road a little after 6 AM and had my miles in by 10:30 AM. Also, I am going to just ride between 20 and 40 miles (32 and 64 KMS) each day.

I am a couple days ride to Oklahoma City. My plan is to spend this coming weekend with the people at the Fuller Center For Housing in Oklahoma City. After Oklahoma City, I will be cycling to Tulsa to Joplin, Missouri. Because of my being in hot-weather mode, my estimated arrival into Joplin will be around June 26th. My 55th birthday on June 15th will be celebrated as I ride between Sulphur and Pauls Valley, Oklahoma south of Oklahoma City. In Joplin, Missouri, I hope to volunteer with the local Habitat For Humanity affiliate and some other ministries in Joplin to help with the tornado recovery effort.

I have decided that this year's mission trip will be a ride more of service than riding. I'm not going for high number of miles. If I ride just 4,000 or 5,000 miles this year that will be okay. Between Shreveport and Joplin, I will possibly stopping to volunteer with Fuller Center For Housing and Habitat For Humanity affiliates along the way and any other ministries that I feel led to stop at. I am not sure where I might go after Joplin. Sometime this year, I might be making my way to Birmingham and Tuskaloosa, Alabama. Since I will be close to the Midwest, I will be possibly be heading to Central Missouri and Iowa to help out with any possible disaster relief along the Missouri River that it is flooding now.

Since the door of me going back to Americus, Georgia for the winter seems to be closed, My plans will be returning to Shreveport, Louisiana and volunteering with the Fuller Center For Housing of NW Louisiana in Shreveport again. I will possibly be there from possibly October or November of this year to possibly March or April of next year.

I will keep everybody abreast through upcoming updates. Usually, I try and add a new update every two weeks along the way so the next one will be around June 27th, 2011.
