TRIP 2012

Update #07 - April 02nd
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
00.00 miles (00.00 KM)

Saturday, March 31st, I met an inspiration. This last weekend was the third annual bike festival in Louisiana called "VeloLouisiana". I pedaled over to Farr Park to take part in the Mayor's Family Bike Day Ride and to be there as they dedicate a new section of the paved bike path on the Mississippi River Levee. There were about a hundred cyclist there. Some people were on tandems and one person had a three person bike (there were two children bike carriers on the bike).

There were eight people on recumbents (three trikes, a long wheelbase, and four short-wheelbases). One of the trike riders was Robert Bailey of Baton Rouge. Robert is an inspiration to me since he is a double amputee. He lost his legs in a farming accident six years ago. Normally, I'm not a fan of recumbent trikes since they are usually really low to the ground but Robert's Adventure trike from
ICE is very interesting. Robert's "Never Give Up" attitude is going to be a driving force to keep me on the road.

When I got back to the house where I am staying at, I did a Google search on Robert. I found an interview about him that was on the local NBC Television station before Robert went to Iowa last year to take part in the 450 mile long ride across Iowa called "RAGBRAI". Here is the LINK . I also found a video on YouTube that shows Robert being interviewed about his perseverance. This was taken during last year's RAGBRAI .

I got to meet Robert again yesterday during the bike festival at a local park. I found out that Robert lives about a mile (1.6 km) away from me and I'm going to try and get together and ride with him before I head out and get on the road. Also, I'm happy to help Robert get a special cycling jersey for recumbent riders through one of my sponsors Reverse Gear .

As I mentioned in some of the past updates, I was planning to head out from Baton Rouge (barring any more problems) sometime between Friday, April 20th and Monday, April 23rd. Because of my dental appointments, this might be pushed back by a couple of weeks. I will probably not head out from Baton Rouge sometime in the first half of May. As with the last couple of mission trips last year, the emphasis will not be how many miles I can travel but how many times that I can help others.

I'll try and add a new update every two weeks along the way so the next one will be around Monday, April 16th.
