TRIP 2012

Update #14 - July 23rd
Union City, Tennessee
558.99 miles (894.38 KM)

The second week of the trip was pretty good. I started the week heading out of Cleveland, Mississippi and I ended the week in Union City, Tennessee. The key factors have been the heat which has been in the high 90s Fahrenheit with the heat indexes in the low 100s Fahrenheit. Because of this, I've been getting on the road before 7 AM and trying to get off the road around 2 PM. I made stops for the night in Clarksdale and North Tunica, Mississippi; South Memphis, Millington, Covington, and Dyersburg, Tennessee. I did get the chance to speak at another church - The First United Methodist Church in Ripley, Tennessee.

I guess the most unusual thing of the trip so far happened in South Memphis, Tennessee. I stopped at a pretty decent motel that had rates in the mid $30s. The motel was pretty new. There were a few problems in the room like the door was a little short. There was a tall gap between the door frame and the door.

I was lying on the bed when I felt something trying to jump on me. Whatever it was just touched my left arm before I swatted it away. Upon investigation, I found a small toad. The body of it was maybe 1.5 inches long. It was sitting on the low shelf of the night stand. I used a small plastic tray and the ice bucket to capture it and put it outside the room. To make sure that it wouldn't come back into the room, I filled the gap below the door with two hand towels. I didn't have a repeat attack during the night.

Tonight is the last night in Tennessee. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to crossing into Kentucky and having a short ride to Hickman. I'll be catching the
Hickman - Dorena Toll Ferry across the Mississippi River. I'm going to be charged $3 for the ride. The ferry is one of the few remaining riverboat ferries in the United States and the only operating ferry crossing the Mississippi River between Missouri and Kentucky. I'll be ending tomorrow in either East Prairie or Charleston, Missouri. I still haven't made the decision on whether to ride straight through the St. Louis, Missouri area or travel around it to the west some.

I'll try and add a new update every week or two weeks along the way so the next one will be posted around July 30th or August 07th.
