Update #27 - December 15th
Cross City, Florida
2,641.12 miles (4,225.79 KM) - Mission Trip 33
5,447.55 miles (8,716.05 KM) - Year Total

The last ten days have had their ups and downs. I was looking at heading back to Baton Rouge, Louisiana but things didn't work out. I'm on the way to the Orlando, Florida area to check out a couple ministries. Hopefully, I'll be able to connect with one and be able to get off the road for a little while.

December 06th : Thomasville, Georgia to Quincy, Florida - I had a little better night. I got a late start around 8:30 AM. About 5 miles down the road, I had to stop and work on the rear wheel again. The tire was getting soft. I put in the patched innertube because I couldn't find a hole. I got about 19 miles (30 KM) in by noon. In Cairo, I stopped at a Walmart to buy two new innertubes and some more patches.

After a short break, I got on GA 111 for the ride to Havana, Florida. The ride south to the Florida State Line went okay. I rode about 37 miles (59 KM) in Georgia today. In Havana, I turned westward on FL 12 to Quincy. The ride west went okay until I got about a mile out of Quincy. There were some hills to climb over. I got into downtown Quincy around 4:30 PM. I found Rev Erde in his office at the First Presbyterian Church. He arranged for me to get a room at a local motel. Before I left the church, he slipped me $20 in a green handshake.

December 07th : Quincy. Florida to Marianna, Florida - I had a little better night. I got a late start around 8:30 AM. The ride to Chattahoochee went okay. A couple of miles West of Chattahoochee, I crossed the Appalachicola River and crossed back into the Central Time Zone. Because of gaining an hour, I got 34 miles (54 KM) in by noon. Between Sneads and Marianna, I had two cross-country cyclists go passed me heading East. I talked with one of them and he told me that he had cycled almost 9,000 miles (14,400 KM).

I got into Marianna around 2 PM. I checked out the four main churches in the downtown area but there were no ministers available. What office staff that I did meet weren't friendly. I stopped at the police department but they didn't know a minister. I was hoping to save the money that I had in my banking account but I used some of it to get a motel room. I found a room in the upper $30s.

Hopefully, I'll have better luck tomorrow..

December 08th : Marianna, Florida to Chipola Park, Florida - I had a little better night. I got a late start around 8:30 AM. About six miles (10 KM) south of Marianna, the rear tire went soft. As I was fixing the tire, these two lady sheriff deputies stopped. It was a little frustrating when one of them wanted me to give them my ID card. I don't know why I needed to be checked out. Before getting back on the road, I did some sewing on some of my bags.

About six miles (10 KM) down the road, the rear tire went soft again. I checked the inside of the tire but I didn't see anything. I patched up the tube. About seven more miles (12 KM) down the road, the rear tire went soft again. I took the rear tire clear off the wheel to check it out. I finally found a very tiny piece of wire sticking up from the inside of tire. This really delayed me badly.

I was really hoping to get into Wewahitchka before dark but I didn't make it. It took a while finding a section of forest that was clear enough to camp out in.

December 09th : Chipola Park, Florida to Wewahitchka, Florida - I had an off night. I woke up really early and I just tossed and turned till daylight. It was around 8:30 AM when I got back on the road. It was under 8 miles (13 KM) into town. I stopped at the United Methodist Church. I talked with the minister before the service. He told me that it would be okay for me to stay at the church for the rest of the day. After the service, a guy slipped me $20 in a handshake. The pastor gave me permission to stay in the nursery. There was a sofa that I could sleep on. A lady at the church took me to the Chinese buffet restaurant for a meal. The food was a little bland because it was cold. At the church, I watched a couple cartoon videos..

December 10th : Wewahitchka, Florida to Port St Joe, Florida - I had an off night. I woke up really early again around 3:30 AM and I just tossed and turned till daylight. It was around 7.45 AM when I got back on the road. The ride to Port St Joe went okay. About 7 miles (11 KM) out, I crossed into the Eastern Time Zone again.

I got into Port St Joe a little after noon. I stopped for something to eat. I didn't feel like going on. I stopped at the First Baptist Church. I talked with the pastor. He offered to get me a room at a motel south of town near the hospital. Before I left the church, the pastor slipped me $6.

December 11th : Port St Joe, Florida to Apalachicola, Florida - I had a little better night. I got maybe 5.5 hours of sleep. There was a breakfast but it wasn't a hot one. I got on the road around 8:30 AM. The ride to Apalachicola went okay. It was at least 15 degrees cooler than yesterday.

I got into Apalachicola around 11 AM. It was clouding up with a light sprinkle so I didn't think that I wanted to tackle the five mile (8 KM) long bridge. I went over to the Trinity Episcopal Church. The rector was pretty friendly. She offered to get me a room at one of the local motels. Also, she gave me a $10 voucher for some groceries at a local grocery store. There is a good chance of rain tomorrow.

December 12th : Apalachicola, Florida to Carrabelle, Florida - I had a little better night. I got maybe 6 hours of sleep. When I looked out the window around 7:30 AM, it was lightly raining. I waited for about an hour. I left the motel around 8:50 AM. I got across the long bridge over the mouth of the Apalachicola River. The rain started up again as I was making my way through Eastpoint. Between Eastpoint and Carrabelle, it started to come down really hard but there wasn't any place for me to get out of the rain so I pushed on.

I got into Carrabelle a little after noon. I was surprised to find somebody in the office of the United Methodist Church. I got to meet the young minister. Aaron offered to get me a room at a motel that I had passed as I was riding into town. Before I left the church, I was given a few food items from the churches food pantry. The rain is supposed to end before dark.

December 13th : Carrabelle, Florida to Medart, Florida - I had a little better night. I got maybe 6 hours of sleep even though I had a strange visitor in bed. Around 8 PM, I felt a strange plop on one of my lower legs. About 40 minutes later, I felt another plop. When I checked it out, I found a frog hopping around the bed. I used to paper cups to capture it and carry it outside.

I got on the road around 8:20 AM. I didn't get so far because I thought that I had left my cell phone in the room. I didn't have very far to go back to check it out. I did misplace the phone and it was in the room. I rode back through town. The ride to Sopchoppy went okay. It was cool in the 40s and the seat was still wet from yesterday's rain.

I got into Sopchoppy around 11:30 AM. The last time that I was in Sopchoppy was in early November of 2007. The Methodist Church had moved across the street to the bigger church that was the old First Baptist Church. I tried connecting with the pastor but all I got to do was leave messages on his answering machine. While I was waiting to see if anybody would show up, the pastor of the smaller church showed up. He told me that he might be able to help but it would be later on in the afternoon. Before he left, he gave me some microwave heated spaghetti from the meal last night.

I was protected from the wind but I was still getting chilled. My pants were soaked from the seat. I was worried about getting hypothermia. Around 3 PM, the pastor of the Methodist church showed up. He told me that when the church moved across the street a policy was made that didn't allow overnights in the church. The pastor offered to take me to Medart and get me a room at the Best Western on US 98. Tomorrow, I have about a 55 mile (88 KM)bride to Perry. I'm going to be heading out right after daylight.

December 14th : Medart, Florida to Perry, Florida - I had a little better night. I got maybe 6 hours of sleep. I woke up around 7 AM. I rushed downstairs to get some breakfast. I got on the road around 7:40 AM. The ride East went okay. I got 35 miles (56 KM) in by noon. The afternoon ride went okay. Throughout the day, I had either 2 or 3 cycle tourists go passed me. One of the guys had something happen to his front wheel. In the morning, there was a cycle tourist head West.

I got into Perry around 2:20 PM. I rode into the downtown area but I didn't find anybody around the churches. I found a motel room that I could afford but there wasn't a heater element in the air conditioning unit so I had to go to the office to see if I could get a portable heater to take the chill off the room. Somebody had left the air conditioning on in the room.

December 15th : Perry, Florida to Cross City, Florida - I had a little better night. The little portable heater got the room warm but not really hot. I got maybe 6 hours of sleep. I got on the road around 8:20 AM. I had both coats on but by 10 AM, I was able to take one coat off. I got about 32 miles in by noon. I stopped for a break at a gas station. I took the other coat off.

I got into Cross City around 2:30 PM. I stopped at a grocery store for a loaf of bread. When I checked the bike, I found out that the more waterproof of my two coats had fallen off the bike. I thought that I had bungied it tight.

I went around to check out the churches. I found some activity at the First Baptist Church. A wedding was getting ready to start but I wasn't able to connect with the minister. I called up Dennis in New York and he offered to get me a room at the local motel.

I'm on the way to the Orlando, Florida area to check out a couple of ministries. Hopefully, I'll be able to connect with one so that I can stop for a while and get off the road. The next update will possibly be posted between December 22nd and December 29th.
