April 29 - North East, Pennsylvania to Ashtabula, Ohio : 65.09 miles (104.14 KM)
I had a decent night. I got on the road around 7:35 AM. It rained a bit during the night and the sky was overcast. The ride back into
North East went okay but the ride was slow. There was a strong crosswind of at least 15 mph. Before leaving the North East area, I took a
short side trip to check out a train museum. The main building (train station) wasn't open so I wandered around the train yard to take
The ride into Erie, Pennsylvania went okay. I got about 24 miles (38.4 KM) done by noon. I stopped to get some lunch on the west end of Erie.
About a half hour after I got back on the road, I had a cycle tourist zip past me. He yelled a few things at me and then he was off. There
was no way that I could catch up to him. I was hoping to catch sight of him again but I didn't. I would have liked to talk to him. He was
the first cycle tourist that I had seen this year.
Around 3 PM, it started to drizzle. It drizzled off and on to the Ohio State Line. I stopped to take the traditional pictures. I took a short
break in Conneaut. I pushed on to Ashtabula. I got into Ashtabula around 6:30 PM. I opted to get a motel room. There were two motels across
the street from each other but I picked the one that looked better. The cheaper one might have been operated by the Patels from Indian.
The American owners of the motel that I picked gave me a $5 discount on the road.
Currently, I am debating on where I will be going to after my stops in the Cincinatti, Ohio area. I was thinking about checking out a bicycle
ministry in Grand Rapids, Michigan but I'm thinking that it would be best to go to Illinois to see if there is anything that I could do
after the flooding along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.
April 30 - Ashtabula, Ohio to Black Horse, Ohio : 74.35 miles (118.96 KM)
I had a decent night. Left the motel around 7:30 AM. I headed West to Geneva and then I turned south to Chadron. I got into Chadron around
4:30 PM. I stopped at the First Christian Church. The janitor helped me connect via his phone with the secretary. The pastor was out because
of new child. The secretary told me that she was going to call me back on my cellphone but after a 20 minute wait I knew that she wasn't
It was well after 5 PM and I figured out that I wasn't going to be able to connect with somebody at another church in town so I headed South
to Ravenna. I hot into Ravenna a little after dark. I came across the Portage Rails to Trails Recreational Trail. I headed West on it. After
riding along it for about twenty minutes, I found a place to camp out.
May 01 - Black Horse, Ohio to Wooster, Ohio : 57.29 miles (91.66 KM)
I had a decent night camping out in my tent. It didn't get cold. I had to portage everything up to the trail because the trail was on top of
a berm and I camped out in a valley. I was on the road around 7:20 AM. I went down the trail about a mile and then got off at first road.
I rode into Akron. I had a good ride into downtown Akron. I had a hard time getting out of Akron to the right road to Wooster. I took quite
a few breaks along the way because the temperature got up into the upper 70s. In Smithville, I stopped to take pictures of the small
historic village. There were ten buildings.
I got into downtown Wooster around 6:30 PM. I couldn't find a church in the downtown area that had evening service. I did stop at a
church that had quite a few cars around it but I got a bad reception from the guy janitor.
I headed out of town. On my way to US 3, I came across a motel. I didn't feel like camping some place so I decided to stop. The evening
desk clerk gave me a $5 discount.
May 02 - Wooster, Ohio to Mount Vernon, Ohio : 48.74 miles (77.98 KM)
I had a decent night. I went to bed a little before 11 PM and I woke up a little before 5 AM. I updated the website. There was a decent
free breakfast. I packed up a couple of the pastries.
I left the motel a little after 8 AM. I took a zig-zag route to US 3. Along the way, I stopped to take some pictures of a turtle that
was sunning itself on a log in a small pond. The ride to Loudonville went okay but there were quite a few hills. Along the way, this guy
stopped me to give me a couple cans of Dr Pepper. I stopped at a gas station in the Northern section of Loudonville for some lunch.
There was a paved bike path that took me most of the way through the Mohican State Park area. There were quite a few hills to get over
between Loudonville and Mt Vernon. I was able to ride up a few of them but there were quite a few that I walked up. I got a glimpse
of an Amish farmer plowing a field by horse power.
I got into downtown Mt Vernon around 6:30 PM. I walked around the downtown area. I saw some cars at the First Presbyterian Church.
They were having an Alpha Discipleship class. There was a meal before the video and discussion. The pastor invited me to take part in the
meal and also the class. During the class, I got to share a little bit. Afterwards, the pastor gave me permission to stay in the parlor
for the night.
May 03 - Mount Vernon, Ohio to Marysville, Ohio : 61.73 miles (98.77 KM)
I had a decent night. Before leaving, Pastor Jonathan gave me a bag of brownies and also his cell phone number. He also gave me free range to
what was in the kitchen. The room was warm enough so I didn't have to use the sleeping bag or turn on the heater. The sofa was long enough
that I was able to stretch out on it.
I fell asleep around 10:30 PM. I did wake up to go to the restroom but I was able to fall back asleep till around 6 AM. I left the church
around 7:20 AM. The ride west on US 36 went really well. I got into Sudbury around 11 AM. I stopped for an early lunch. Even being off the road
for a half hour, I was still able to get in 36 miles (57.6 KM) by noon time.
The wind pushed me along to Delaware. It was too big of a city for me to stop in so I pushed on to Marysville. I got into downtown Marysville
around 3:45 PM. I stopped at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. The pastor was friendly. The secretary arranged for a room at the new Holiday Inn Express. I
just had to backtrack two miles (3.2 KM).
May 04 - Marysville, Ohio to Tipp City, Ohio : 65.48 miles (104.77 KM)
I had a decent night. I woke up early but I was able to fall asleep till around 5:40 AM. There was an okay hot breakfast. I left the motel
a little before 8 AM.
I rode through Marysville and I got on US 36 / SR 4. There was still a tailwind that pushed me along. I was going to ride to Strongsville
but I opted to ride to Urbana instead. I got about 29 miles (46.4 KM) by noon.
After lunch, I got on OH 55 for the ride to Troy. I hit some hills and some bad roads between Urbana and Thackery. Once I got beyond Thackery,
the terraign leveled out and the highway improved. The tailwind picked up again and I was flying.
I got into downtown Troy around 4:30 PM. I called up my friend in Tipp City to get better directions. I was about four miles (6 KM) away. Before
leaving the downtown area, I took a lot of pictures of the life sized statues of people in different scenes. The statues were pretty realistic.
I'm going to take at least tomorrow and possibly Monday off for sure because I rode 380 miles (608 KM) from last Sunday. I've ridden over
630 miles (1,008 KM) since leaving Chittenango, New York.
May 07 - Tipp City, Ohio to Monroe, Ohio : 58.98 miles (94.37 KM)
I had a decent night. I got Alice pretty well packed up last night. I played with the kid's Russian Dwarf hamster a little bit before going to bed. I went to bed
around 11 PM and I woke up around 5:30 AM. I got cleaned up, dressed, and finished packing up Alice before having breakfast. I had to wait
till Jason got back from taking one of his boys to school. Before I left, Jason slipped me $50.
I got on the road around 7:40 AM. I rode into downtown Tipp City before getting on the Great Miami River Recreational Trail. The path of the
paved bike trail was really confusing because there was no real signage. There were a lot of intersecting bike trails. I got lost several
times. I had to turn around several times. There were several sections of construction.
In downtown Dayton, there was a large section of road construction. I didn't know that the trail was closed until I got about a mile (2 KM)
down the road and the trail ended in mud. I was really frustrated that there was no sign telling of the closure and I had the long backtrack.
I had to ride on the roads before I got back on the trail. Along the way, I stopped for lunch.
I got back on the trail till Franklin. I got on OH 4. I opted to get a motel room in Monroe. There was a good chance for rain tonight.
I'll be riding through Cincinatti tomorrow.
May 08 - Monroe, Ohio to North Bend, Ohio : 44.93 miles (71.89 KM)
I had a decent night at the motel. It rained for a couple of hours really hard. I couldn't keep interested on what was on television so I went
to bed around 9:30 PM. I woke up around 5:00 AM.
I left the motel around 7:45 AM. The ride into Cincinatti was slow because there was a lot of traffic lights whenever I got into a town. I took
OH 4 into the outskirts of Cincinatti and then I switched over to US 26/ 127. I got into Cincinatti a little after noon. I stopped to get some
The ride into the downtown area was slow. It took a while finding the River Road (US 50). I couldn't get on it because there was some
road construction and it joined an interstate for a couple of miles. It took a while finding the alternate way to where US 50 split off from
the interstate but I couldn't get on it because it was under construction as well. I didn't know the area so I opted to follow some directions
that somebody gave me. I got on OH 264. This took me up a really long hill. I felt that I might have been going the wrong direction but
without a compass I didn't know. There wasn't any shoulder for me to ride along. As I was going up a hill, a city police car rushed around me
and the officer yelled at me.
I was getting concerned that I was really heading in the wrong direction. I was getting farther and farther away from US 50 and the Ohio River.
Around 5:30 PM, I stopped at a gas station and called up my friends in North Bend to see if they could come and pick me up.
When I got to their house, they had already set up their family sized tent for me. I've got pretty well everything that I need including
electricity. I'm taking tomorrow off because of possible bad weather and also to let my lower lip hill. There is a sun blister spot.
May 10 - North Bend, Ohio : 00.00 miles (00.00 KM)
I hadn't really planned to take two days off the road considering that I had already taken two days off the road the first part of the week
but I needed them. I needed to stay out of the sun so the sun blister on my lower lip could heal. Also, I wanted to avoid riding in some
really bad weather. This afternoon it rained pretty hard. I was expecting the inside of the tent to get wet but it didn't.
I'll be getting back on the road tomorrow morning. Tomorrow there is only a 20% chance of more rain showers. I've got about 5 miles (8 KM) left
to ride in Ohio. From North Bend, I'll be riding Westward across Southern Indiana and Illinois to Granite City, Illinois, which is across the
Mississippi River from St Louis, Missouri. From Granite City, I'll be turning Northwards to ride up the Mississippi River to Lansing, Iowa,
which is in the extreme Northeast corner of Iowa. I haven't made up my mind on whether I'll be riding along the Eastern or Western side of
the Mississippi River. My plan while riding up the Mississippi River is to see what I can do to help out with the recovery after the flooding
of the Mississippi River.
The next trip update should be posted sometime around May 24th.
