Update #21 - September 21
Canton, Missouri

Mission Trip 74 Total: 228.51 miles (365.62 km)
Year Total : 4,315.36 miles (6,904.58 km)

September 07 - R : Thomson, Illinois to Clinton, Iowa : 20.08 miles (32.13 km)
00.50 C 01.50 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 20.08 miles (32.13 km)
Year Total : 4,106.93 miles (6,571.08 km)

I had an okay afternoon and night. I went to bed around 11 pm. I had to turn off the air conditioner unit because the heater element made a lot of noise. I did a little bit of tossing and turning during the night.

It was almost 7:20 am when I woke up. I quickly got dressed and went the office to see what was there. There was only orange juice and toast. I got shaved and finished packing Allison. I never thought that I would do this again this year. I was a little frustrated that the cyclometer wasn't registering. I tried many times fixing the alignment of the magnet and the sensor but the cable must have been broken inside the casing.

The temperature was cool in the sixties so I put on my long sleeve inner shirt. The sky was overcast. It was about 9 am when I left the motel. From the motel, it was a little over a mile into Thomson. I stopped at the Caseys for some chocolate milk. Instead of cycling along IL 84 to Fulton, I decided to ride West towards the Mississippi River and get on the Great River Road Bike Trail. It's probably been four years since I've done it.

It was around 10:50 am when I got into Fulton. I stopped at the Dollar General to get a loaf of whole wheat bread and some more peanut butter. I then went to the nearby gas station for a short break. It was lightly drizzling. From the gas station, it was about a mile ride to the Mississippi River bridge. The sidewalk was narrow. I walked Allison about halfway across the bridge and then I rode the rest of the way to Clinton, Iowa. There was an overhead sign so I couldn't take a picture of Allison with it.

I got on US 67 which took me through downtown Clinton. I stopped at a BK for some lunch. I did experience some uncomfort. I didn't that the uncomfort was heart related. I think that it was more related to my not sleeping well for the past week or so, I was able to get my onion rings done but I only ate half of my sandwich.

From the BK, I rode passed the Super 8 to the Walmart where I got a few things including a new cyclometer. After doing some shopping, I took the time to get a much needed haircut.

September 09 - SU : Clinton, Iowa to Le Claire, Iowa : 23.47 miles (37.55 km)
01.09 C 02.91 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 43.55 miles (69.68 km)
Year Total : 4,130.40 miles (6,608.64 km)

I think that there were a few times during the night where I actually dreamt. The melatonin pills seem to work. I woke up a little before 6 am. I took my time getting ready to get back on the road.

It was around 8:30 am when I left the motel. Instead of taking Allison up the ramp to the front entrance, I left through a side door. Once I got on US 56 heading South, there was a tailwind to push me along. The temperature was in the 60s. I've got to find another lightweight jacket somehow. I rode the paved bike path to the Eastern edge of Camache. I could have tried going into town to see if there was a church that I could stop at but I wasn't sure about the ride out of town. Us 67 was mostly a level ride. Because of the tailwind, the miles flew by. I was cycling between 9 and 10 mph. I was hoping to find a church along the way but there were none.

I got into Princeton around 10:45 AM. I happened to ride passed Zion Lutheran Church. The service had started at 10:15 am. Even though there was a half hour left, I decided to stop. Right after the sermon, the pastor recognized me. I got to say a few words.

From Princeton, it was a short rid along the Mississippi River to Le Claire. It was around noon when I got into Le Claire. I was really surprised that even with the late start and going to church I had ridden over 20 miles by noon. I rode through town to I-80. Before going to the Super 8, I stopped at the McDonalds for a hamburger and something to drink. From the McD's, it was a short walk up a hill to the Super 8. It was a surprise that I was able to check in early.

I'm going to start late again tomorrow morning, because I only have a short ride into Bettendorf tomorrow.

September 10 - M : Le Claire, Iowa to Bettondorf, Iowa : 13.87 miles (22.19 km)
01.44 C 03.56 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 57.42 miles (91.87 km)
Year Total : 4,144.27 miles (6,630.83 km)

Rough night. I didn't get much sleep during the night. I waited till a little after 9 am to leave the motel. The ride to Bettondorf went quickly. I got to the Days Inn around noon. I was glad that I was able to check in early.

September 11 - T : Bettondorf, Iowa to Muscatine, Iowa : 33.47 miles (53.55 km)
02.33 C 03.67 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 90.89 miles (145.42 km)
Year Total : 4,177.74 miles (6,684.38 km)

Rough night. I didn't get much sleep last night. The blackout curtains didn't cover each other so there was a lot of light coming into the room. Being that the room was close to the entrance, there was a lot more light. I woke up several times during the night thinking that it was morning. I woke up around 5 am but was able to go back to a semi-sleep till around 6:30 am. There wasn't much for breakfast but cereal in containers and milk, bagels in plastic bags, and small muffins.

I left the hotel a little after 8 am. I backtracked for less than a mile and then I got on Locust street. Because of road construction, I had to find a different way down the hill back to US 67. I rode into downtown Davenport. I was able to get on US 61. The ride was okay because it was pretty level. Just beyond I-280, I stopped at a gas station for a break. After the break, I safely rode along US 61. There was a narrow shoulder that was separated bya rumble strip.

By noon, I had ridden a little over 20 miles. There were several climbs. Somewhere between where I had stopped for the break and about 8 miles out of Muscatine, I noticed that I had lost the rear horizontal safety flag.

I got to the hotel in Muscatine around 2:40 pm.

Today is the 17th anniversary of 9-11. Hurricane Florence is barreling down at North Carolina at 17 mph. It's a Cat 4 but could strengthen to a Cat 5.

September 14 - F : Muscatine, Iowa to Wapello, Iowa : 27.45 miles (43.92 km)
02.97 C 06.03 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 118.34 miles (189.34 km)
Year Total : 4,205.19 miles (6,728.30 km)

Rough night. I didn't get much sleep last night. It is really amazing that I haven't really slept in a long while.

I left the motel around 8:20 am. Instead of getting directly back on US 61, I decided to go through Muscatine. From the hotel, there was a downhill coast to downtown Muscatine. There was a little bit of road construction on IA 92. On the west side of Muscatine, I was quite surprised at coming across a bike shop. I decided to stop because I have been having problems with the middle gears. They have been slipping for a couple of days. The owner of the shop got right on Allison. It didn't take long to get Allison working again. I was only charged five dollars for the repair.

Once I got back on US 61, the ride South went okay. There was a little bit of a tailwind to push me along. The terrain was a little level but I did have a few climbs.

When I crossed into Louisa County, the ride became a lot harder because the divided four lane highway with the shoulder disappeared and the rod became a two lane highway. I was really disappointed that the shoulder had disappeared and the edge of the shoulder was really rough. I was really happy finding a small flag that I could use as a safety flag. It was a really tricky eight mile ride to the Iowa River. Once I crossed the bridge, there was a paved shoulder the rest of the way into Wapello.

I got into Wapello around 2:30 pm. In Wapello, I stopped at a gas station for a short break and then went to the Dollar General next door to get a few more groceries. From the Dollar General, it was a short ride to the motel on the West side of Wapello. I got a room outside. The room was a lot better than what I expected. The only problem was that there was no wifi signal.

September 15 - SA : Wapello, Iowa to West Burlington, Iowa : 28.04 miles (44.86 km)
03.67 C 06.33 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 146.38 miles (234.21 km)
Year Total : 4,233.23 miles (6,773.17 km)

Rough night. I didn't get much sleep last night. I can't believe that I've haven't slept in a couple of weeks.

I woke up around 6:30 am. I left the motel around 8:40 am. The ride south was okay even though there was no shoulder. I stopped at a gas station outside of Morning Sun for a break. I was really happy that a shoulder started when I crossed into Des Moines County. I stopped at a gas station in Mediapolis for another break. I got 20 miles in by 12:30 pm.

About 4 miles out of West Burlington there was a long downhill run. There was another short climb and then another downhill run. Before stopping at the Super 8, I stopped at a Dairy Queen for a rootbeer float.

Instead of going a long way tomorrow, I'm going to go downtown for church and then find my back to US 61 and stop at the Comfort Inn near the airport. I'm saving a lot of money because I'm using some of my reward points. Because of the points, I saved almost $60 on the room.

September 16 - SU : West Burlington, Iowa to Burlington, Iowa : 06.12 miles (09.78 km)
03.82 C 07.18 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 152.50 miles (234.21 km)
Year Total : 4,239.35 miles (6,782.96 km)

It was really frustrating that I spent most of the night tossing and turning again. I don't know if I ever got any sleep. It was around 11:30 pm when I tried falling asleep. Hopefully things will get better when I stop taking the heart medication, I only have a couple of days worth of pills yet.

I got some breakfast around 7:20 am. I left the hotel around 8:20 am. From the hotel, it was a short ride into the downtown area. There was a long downhill coast. I stopped at the First United Methodist Church. The first service was going to start around 9 am. I got there about five minutes before the service. I met the lady minister before the service.

The service was kind of packed because there was a puppet team that did a few songs. Also, there was a young boy who played a couple of songs on the piano. Before the short sermon, the pastor introduced me and I got to say a few words. After the service, nobody took the time to talk to me. They were getting some cake that was celabrating the retirement of the office manager. I didn't feel like trying to attend one of the Sunday school classes.

From the church, it was a couple of miles to the Comfort Suites. I was able to ride most of the way back to US 61 except for a couple of blocks. I got to the hotel around 11:30 am. I was happy that I was able to check in early. The room was made into a suite with a separate sitting area and two televisions. I got the room at a $60 discount because I was finally able to use some reward points.

I've got a short ride to Fort Madison tomorrow.

September 17 - M : Burlington, Iowa to Fort Madison, Iowa : 20.74 miles (33.18 km)
04.34 C 07.66 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 173.24 miles (277.18 km)
Year Total : 4,260.09 miles (6,816.14 km)

It was really frustrating that I spent most of the night tossing and turning again. I don't know if I ever got any sleep. According to what I've researched I've found out that a human male could survive 16 days without sleep but still have some mental problems. It's been almost a month or more since I've gotten a lot of sleep,

I got out of bed around 6:30 am. There was a pretty good breakfast with a lot of hot food. I left the hotel around 8:30 am.

The ride south went okay. For most of the way, the ride was pretty level. The temperature was in the upper 80s. There was one uphill climb but I was able to ride most of it up. About four miles out of Fort Madison, I got on Bus US 61. About a mile out of Ft Madison, there was a long downhill run to the Mississippi River. I stopped at a Dollar General to get a few groceries. Before stopping at the Knights Inn, I stopped at a McDs for a cheeseburger and some sweet tea.

I've got under 20 miles to Keokuk. From Keokuk, it's going to be less than 4 miles to the Missouri state line.

September 18 - T : Fort Madison, Iowa to Keokuk, Iowa : 20.04 miles (33.06 km)
04.84 C 08.16 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 193.28 miles (209.25 km)
Year Total : 4,280.13 miles (6,848.21 km)

I was able to sleep a little bit.

I left the motel around 8:30 am. The ride South went okay. For most of the ride, the terrain was level. There was a bit of a headwind to slow me down some. I stopped as a gas station outside of Montrose for a short break. I got into the Keokuk area a little before noon. Before going to the Super 8, I stopped at a Caseys for something to eat and drink. It's good that I got into Keokuk early because the temperature was in the 90s.

I might have to stay over for a few days because the afternoon highs for the next couple of days will be in the upper 90s with the heat indexes in the low 100s.

September 21 - F : Keokuk, Iowa to Canton, Missouri : 35.23 miles (56.37 km)
05.72 C 10.28 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 228.51 miles (365.62 km)
Year Total : 4,315.36 miles (6,904.58 km)

I was able to sleep a little bit.

I left the hotel around 8 am. The temperature was down into the 70s and the sky was overcast. It was about a three mile ride into the downtown area. There was a long climb out of the river valley. It was about a five mile ride to the Des Moines River and the MO state line. I stopped to take the traditional picture of the state sign. I stopped at a gas station outside of Alexandria for a short break.

US 61 was kind of rough because there was some road construction and the shoulder was narrow and pretty rough. The ride was also rough because there was a stiff crosswind. When US 61 turned South where it connected with MO 27, the ride became a lot better because the wind became a tailwind and there was a shoulder along the 4 lane divided highway. Even with some road construction, I made almost 23 miles by noon.

About 4 miles out of Canton, I got on Bus US 61. In downtown Canton, I stopped at a gas station for a short break. From the downtown area, there was a climb back out of the river valley passed a christian college. I got to my hotel around 2:30 pm.

The next update might be posted between September 28th and October 05th.
