TRIP 2018

Update #22 - October 04
Chester, Illinois

Mission Trip 74 Total: 502.41 miles (804.86 km)
Year Total : 4,589.26 miles (7,342.82 km)

September 22 - SA : Canton, Missouri to Hannibal, Missouri : 40.17 miles (4.27 km)
06.22 C 10.78 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 268.68 miles (429.89 km)
Year Total : 4,355.53 miles (6,968.65 km)

I was able to sleep a little bit.

I left the hotel around 8 am. The temperature was down into the 60s and there was a bit of a wind to deal with. The ride was a roller coaster with a lot of hills. I was able to ride up most of the hills even though a couple of them were kind of steep and I almost got off and walked up them. Even with the hills and some road construction where they were putting in a new bridge, I was able to get almost 25 miles in by noon.

In Palmyra, I stopped at a Wendys for a late lunch. From Palmya, the ride to Hannibal was slow when US 61 turned East near Barkley. I got into the Hannibal area around 3 pm. The Super 8 was near the top of a steep hill. I did get off and walk a little bit.

September 24 - M : Hannibal, Missouri to Bowling Green, Missouri : 34.07 miles (54.51 km)
07.07 C 10.93 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 302.75 miles (484.40 km)
Year Total : 4,389.60 miles (7,023.36 km)

I was able to sleep a little bit.

I left the hotel a little after 8 am. The temperature was cool in the upper 60s and the sky was really overcast. The ride along US 61 was really up and down with a lot of hills. Some of the hills were pretty long and the climbs a little steep but I was able to ride all of them. I did stop at a gas station outside of New London for a short break. Even with the hills, I was able to get 21 miles in by noon.

The afternoon ride was okay. I got to the outskirts of Bowling Green around 2 pm. It was a couple of miles ride to the Super 8 on the southern edge of town.

Tomorrow, I'm probably going to stay over. According to the weather, there is an 80% chance for storms. I might need the break anyway because I am experiencing a lot of pain in my right knee.

September 26 - W : Bowling Green, Missouri to Louisiana, Missouri : 15.47 miles (24.75km)
07.96 C 13.04 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 318.22 miles (509.157 km)
Year Total : 4,405.07 miles (7,048.11 km)

I was able to sleep a little bit.

I left the hotel around 8:30 am. The wind had died down but the temperature was in the 50s. I got back on US 61 and headed north for a couple of miles and then got on US 54 going East. The ride east went okay. There was some downhll runs and there were long stretches of level ground.

I got into Louisiana around 10 am. I stopped at a Community thrift store to see if there were any lightweight jackets. There was one jacket but it advertised a casino. I stopped at a Dollar General to get a few things. I got to the motel around 11 am. I got put up in a section of the motel that was up a steep hill. At least, there was wifi to connect to.

Tomorrow, I'm going to have a quick ride across the Mississippi River Bridge. At least, the ride across the bridge is going to be downhill. The only problem is that the bridge is narrow and there is no shoulder.

Going through my journals, I found out that I did stay at the motel back in late October of 2014. According to the journal entry, the room was actually on the side of the motel and down a flight of stairs.

September 27 - R : Louisiana, Missouri to Carrolton, Illinois : 50.48 miles (80.77 km)
08.96 C 13.04 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 368.70 miles (589.92 km)
Year Total : 4,455.55 miles (7,128.88 km)

I was able to sleep a little bit. Last night, I had walked down the hill to a nearby gas station and bought some chocolate milk for breakfast.

I left the motel around 8:00 am. I carefully walked Allison down the steep hill instead of trying to ride her. The ride across the Mississippi River bridge went okay. Traffic was courteous. Halfway across the bridge, I crossed back into Illinois. The new bridge was a little over halfway built.

A couple of miles from the Mississippi River, I hit a patch of thick fog. At least, there was a shoulder that I could ride along. Because it was cold and damp, I got out my rain coat. It did help cut out the cold some. About 6 miles from the River, I turned South on IL 96. A couple of miles out of Pleasant Hill, a couple on touring bikes rode passed me heading South. They didn't stop to talk. They disappeared out of sight very fast. I rode through Pleasant Hill. The fog finally burned off.

By noon, I was surprised that I had ridden almost 27 miles. A couple of miles out of Belleville, the cyclists showed up and passed me. The guy gave me an angry look. They pulled off the road a couple of hundred feet in front of me but I just rode passed them. For some reason, the cyclists turned around and headed back north. IL 96 went up a hill and I was able to ride up it without much problem. Six miles out of Kampsville, IL 96 turned East. There was a couple of miles of downhill.

I got into Kampsville around 1:45 pm. There wasn't any place to stop at so I just rode over to the ferry for the ride across the Illinois River. There was about a five minute wait for the ferry to come back to the west side. The ride across the river took about six minutes. At Eldred, there was a hill that I walked up. The climb was about a half mile long. I'm really surprised that I didn't have any pain in my chest while I walked up the hill. From the top of the hill to Carrolton, the ride along IL 108 went okay.

I got into Carrolton around 3:30 pm. I stopped at the Sierra Motel on the southern edge of town. The parking lot was stone but the room was okay. The only problem is that there is a venetian blind with vertical slats in the window.

My plan for tomorrow was going to have me stop in Jerseyville but I'll be riding to Alton instead.

September 28 - F : Carrolton, Illinois to Upper Alton, Illinois : 35.48 miles (56.77 km)
09.85 C 13.15 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 404.18 miles (646.69 km)
Year Total : 4,491.03 miles (7,185.68 km)

I wasn't able to sleep very much during the night because of the light coming into the room from the vertical venetian blind.

I left the motel around 8:40 am. The temperature was in the 60s so I wore my long sleeve inner shirt. After about five miles, the shoulder that I was riding on disappeared. The rest of the ride to Jerseyville was slow and tricky because there was a really narrow shoulder and there were hills. I got into Jerseyville around 10:30 am. I stopped at a gas station for a short break.

The ride from Jerseyville was better because there was a shoulder to ride along. A little after noon, I passed the 20 mile mark. About five miles out of Godfrey, the highway became a divided 4 lane highway. Near Alton, I followed local roads to get onto IL 3. In Upper Alton, I stopped at a Goodwill in a shopping center. It was good that I stopped because I was able to find a lightweight jacket (windbreaker). From the shopping center, it was a couple of miles ride to the Comfort Inn where I got a reduced rate room.

September 29 - SA : Upper Alton, Illinois to Fairview Heights, Illinois : 37.48 miles (59.97 km)
10.79 C 13.21 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 441.66 miles (706.66 km)
Year Total : 4,528.51 miles (7,245.62 km)

I was able to get a little sleep last night. The room was a lot darker than the night before. It was around 6:40 am when I got out of bed.

I left the hotel around 8:20 am. The temperture was cool in the 50s so I put on my new lightweight jacket. I followed local roads for a short distance and then got on a bike trail on top of a levee along the Mississippi River. Near Oldenburg, I got back on local roads and headed West to IL 11. I stopped for an early lunch at a McDs in Pontoon Beach.

In Four Corners, I got on a bike trail but after a couple of miles I had to backtrack about a half mile so I could get on another bike trail that took me to IL 157. I headed South to Caseyville. The ride was a little tricky because of no shoulder but I got a shoulder to ride along passed I-70. I got glimpses of downtown St Louis and the Arch but I was too far away to take any pictures.

In Caseyville, I got on O'Fallon Drive that took me up to the top of a ridge line. I did get off and walk a bit near the top of the ride. From the top of the ridge, it was a short ride along Il 159 to the Super 8 in Fairview Heights just north of I-64.

I've got a short ride to Belleville tomorrow.

September 30 - SU : Fairview Heights, Illinois to Belleville, Illinois : 08.79 miles (14.06km)
11.01 C 13.99 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 450.45 miles (720.72 km)
Year Total : 4,537.30 miles (7,259.68 km)

I was able to get a little sleep last night. The strangest thing was that I actually had REM sleep so I was able to dream. I woke up from a dream. It was almost 7 am when I woke up. There wasn't much in the way of hot food so I opted for cereal.

Instead of going clear through the hotel to the office and try to get through the front doors, I put a card key in the door and went through the back door since I was only one room away from them. It wasn't cold enough to wear my jacket.

From the hotel, it was about a 3 mile ride to Christ Church (United Methodist). It was going to be a contemporary service. The church was big enough that it had a coffee cafe. I sat in one of the chairs in the main hallway to wait for the 9:30 am service. One of the guys there got me a bottle of water. There were classes for kids but none for adults. A couple people came by to talk to me. I went into the sanctuary around 9:15 am. There was a countdown clock. I got to talk to the sr pastor before the service. The service was really stagy with colored lights and other stuff. There was no indication that this was a Methodist church. There wasn't any time for prayers, etc. The pastor gave an okay sermon but it was just a launching pad for the new financial campaign. Nobody talked to me after the service.

On the way to Belleville, I stopped at a BK for some lunch and also at an Aldis to get some groceries. I got to the motel at the eastern side of the downtown area around noon. I was able to check in early.

October 02 - T : Belleville, Illinois to Redbud, Illinois : 24.89 miles (39.82 km)
11.63 C 15.37 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 475.34 miles (760.54 km)
Year Total : 4,562.19 miles (7,299.50 km)

I was able to get a little sleep last night. I left the motel around 8:10 am. The temperature was already in the 70s. There was a slight headwind. The ride south went okay till about five miles out of Redbud. The shoulder that I was riding along disappeared. There were a couple of small hills that I walked up because there was a safe shoulder to ride up them. By noon, I had ridden around 23 miles.

I stopped at a McDs for some lunch before going to the local motel.

There is a good chance for temps in the 90s. There is also the threat of strong winds from the SW so I might stay over.

October 04 - R : Redbud, Illinois to Chester, Illinois : 27.06 miles (43.31 km)
12.31 C 16.69 R
Mission Trip 74 Total: 502.41 miles (804.86 km)
Year Total : 4,589.26 miles (7,342.82 km)

I was able to get a little sleep last night. I did spend a lot of time tossing and turning.

I left the motel around 8 am. The sky was overcast and it was a little cool. The temperature was cool in the 60s. The ride south was a little tricky because there was a section of highway that had no shoulder. In some places, the shoulder was pretty rough. There were a couple of hills that I walked up. By noon, I had ridden around 22 miles.

The rest of the way into Chester was okay. I did have to stop and add some air to the back tire. I got into Chester a little after 1 pm. It was a short ride to the hotel where I had a reservation.

The next update might be posted between October 11th and October 18th.
